Day 4: NCLEX Prep with AI Tutors

Use Claude or ChatGPT as a personal NCLEX tutor: generate practice questions in the current Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN) format, extract the rationale behind every answer, identify weak content areas, and build a study plan tuned to your timeline. Free, on demand, and surprisingly effective.

What is the Next-Generation NCLEX (NGN)?

NCSBN launched the Next-Generation NCLEX in April 2023 for both NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN. It tests the same content as the prior exam (the Test Plan still organizes content into Client Needs categories: Safe and Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, Physiological Integrity), but it uses new item types designed to assess clinical judgment more directly: extended multiple response, drag-and-drop, drop-down cloze, matrix/grid, bowtie, and case-study clusters that string several items around a single unfolding scenario. The scoring also changed — it now uses partial credit on most NGN item types.

You should know this because the question bank in your school's prep materials may still be heavy on classic four-option multiple choice. Asking the AI for NGN-style items closes that gap.

The four-prompt NCLEX system

Prompt 1: question generation

- 2 classic 4-option multiple choice
- 1 extended multiple response (select all that apply, 5-6 options)
- 1 drop-down cloze (a sentence with a blank requiring a clinical
  decision)
- 1 NGN-style case study with 2 follow-up items

For each question:
- Set the scenario at the level of a newly licensed RN [or PN].
- Use realistic vital signs, lab values, and timing.
- Make the distractors plausible — common student errors.
- Match the NCSBN Test Plan Client Needs categorization.

Do not give the answers yet. List them at the end after I respond.

Prompt 2: rationale extraction

This is the prompt that does the actual learning. It is also the prompt students most often skip.

Prompt 3: weakness mapping

For each question, classify it by:

- NCSBN Client Needs category (Safe Care, Health Promotion,
  Psychosocial, Physiological)
- Specific subcategory (e.g., Pharm, Reduction of Risk, Basic Care)
- Nursing process step (assessment / diagnosis / planning /
  implementation / evaluation)
- Cognitive level (knowledge / application / analysis)

After classifying, identify the THREE weakest patterns and what
underlying knowledge gap they suggest. Be specific — not just
"Pharm" but "antibiotic side effects" or "insulin onset times."

Prompt 4: study-plan generation

Plan structure:

Daily plan template:
- Topic of the day
- 30-min content read (textbook chapter or NCSBN resource)
- 25-question set on that topic, AI-generated
- 10-min rationale review for missed questions
- One paragraph "what I learned" written in my own words

Free prep alternatives that pair well with AI

How to actually use this for a week

Day 1: pick a weak topic from your last clinical rotation. Run prompt 1 to get 5 questions. Try them on paper. Run prompt 2 to grade and learn. Repeat with a second topic.

Day 2: do the same with two new topics. At the end of the day, dump every question you missed into a running file.

Day 3: same.

Day 4: run prompt 3 on the running file. The AI will tell you your three weakest patterns. Spend the next two days only on those.

Day 5: pick the weakest of the three. Read the corresponding chapter in Saunders or your textbook. Then ask the AI for 25 questions on it. Get to 80%.

Day 6: pick the second weakest. Same drill.

Day 7: rest. Sleep matters more than one more set of questions; the literature on test prep is unanimous.

HIPAA / nursing-board-compliance pitfalls

Homework before Day 5

  1. Pick three topics you have struggled with this term. Run prompt 1 on each. Save the questions and answers in a single file.
  2. Do them. Be honest. Mark every miss.
  3. Run prompt 3 on the running miss file. Note the three weakest patterns.
  4. Build an 8-week plan with prompt 4. Block the first two weeks on your calendar.
  5. Note one factual error (if any) the AI made. We will use this in Day 5 to talk about why your AI-use log matters.

Disclaimer. AI-generated NCLEX questions are practice fuel, not an exam mirror. The actual NCLEX is psychometrically validated by NCSBN; AI questions are not. Use AI for volume and variety, but anchor your final preparation in NCSBN-published or board-vetted materials. Always check with your nursing program and state board for current rules on AI use in coursework.
